Initially, Nicolae studied at Fine Arts School of Cluj (present-day Art and Design University of Cluj-Napoca), graduating in 1963. He continued his studies at Ion Andreescu Art Institut at Sculpture Department. In 1969, the painter graduated from the educational institution.
Since 1971, Maniu has participated in regional, national and international exhibitions, organized by the Romanian Ministry of Culture. In 1983, the painter moved to Köln, Germany, and in 1993 he settled in Paris, France.
Beginning from 1986, Maniu has regularly participated in the traditional Salons in Paris. Also, his works were exhibited at different International Art Fairs in Basel, Geneva, Rome, Barcelona, Brussels, Hamburg, New York and Miami.
Maniu attained numerous awards during his lifetime, including the First Prize and Gold Medal of the National Federation of French Culture, The Great Award of the European "Art and Trade" Biennial under the high patronage of the French Ministry of Culture and others.
Nicolae's work "The Re-Bearing of Fruit" was sold at Artmark "Post-War and Contemporary Art Auction" in 2017 for $16,436.
In 2015, Nicolae was made an Honorary Ambassador of Romanian culture in Germany.
His paitings are part of numerous important private art collections all over the world.
