Background
Nicole Povel was born in 1955, in the decades after the Second World War. In the Netherlands, university legal education formed the basis for both the legal profession and the notarial profession, and the later stages of Povel's training followed that path.
Education
Povel studied at Leyden University, the older spelling of Leiden University, with a degree dated 1980. Founded in 1575, Leiden is the oldest university in the Netherlands and has a long tradition of legal and humanistic study.
Povel also studied at the Amsterdam (VU) University, with study dated 1981. The Vrije Universiteit was founded in Amsterdam in 1880 on Calvinist principles as a free university independent of state control, and it is known today as VU Amsterdam.
Povel's education also included candidacy as a civil law notary, the Dutch training stage for notaries. Dutch civil-law notaries are government-appointed professionals with a university law degree who are legally competent to carry out certain transactions, such as property transfers and company incorporations.
Career
Povel is documented as a partner at Resident Associates. A partner in a law firm holds a senior position within the firm's ownership and management, and in this role the lawyer takes on responsibility for client matters and the firm's direction.
The Resident Associates connection is the principal professional role recorded for Povel, and it reflects the legal practice that followed university legal training in the Netherlands.
