Nikolai Berzarin was educated locally.
Entering the Red Army in 1918 and serving in the civil war, he led the 32d Inf Div against the Japanese at Iake Khasan in 1938. Gen Maj Berzarin commanded the 27th Army (May-Dec 1941), then led the 34th Army to Oct 1942. Promoted to general lieutenant, he headed the 39th Army from Sep 1943 to May 1944 and then took over the 5th Shock Army. The latter was the first to enter Berlin, and Gen Col Berzarin (May 45) was the city’s first Soviet commandant. He was killed in a motorcycle or car accident.
