Educated at the high school, university and conservatory in Stockholm.
Served in the Swedish Army. Began to sing at the Stockholm opera, 1952. His first teacher was Martin Eman, a famous Swedish Wagnerian tenor in the 1930s.
Recommended by Karajan to La Scala. Moved to the Paris Opera, 1954. Since then has appeared at most great opera houses in the world to great acclaim.
Well known for his welfare and cultural work among Russian exiles.
