Nikolai Ivanovich graduated from vocational school number 12, the Leningrad Institute of Soviet Trade named after F. Engels (1966), the Moscow Institute of Management of the Academy of National Economy under the Council of Ministers of the USSR.
Nikolai Ivanovich began his labor activity at the age of 14. Since 1953 he worked as a wood modeler at the Nevsky Machine-Building Plant named after Lenin. After demobilization he returned to his former place of work.

Since 1959 he worked as an instructor, head of the organizational department, secretary of the Nevsky District Committee of the Komsomol of Leningrad (1959-1961), instructor of the Leningrad Regional Committee of the Komsomol (1961-1962), instructor of the Nevsky District Committee of the CPSU (1962-1965).
Since 1965 to December 1969 Nikolai Ivanovich worked as a deputy director for material and technical support of the Leningrad paper factory named after Volodarsky and director of the Leningrad State Technical Paper Factory of the USSR Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
In 1969 Nikolai Ivanovich was appointed as a Deputy Chief of the Main Directorate of the "Soyuzglavbum" under the USSR State Logistics Committee. Since 1972 to 1978 he worked as an instructor of the Planning and Finance Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU, where he was engaged in analyzing the functioning of organizations associated with material and technical supply. In May 1978, he was appointed Chief of the Main Directorate of the "Soyuzglavtar" under the USSR State Logistics Committee. At the same time, he was the Chairman of the USSR Technical Committee on Standardization of Packaging "ISO" at the United Nations.
In August 1986, Nikolai Ivanovich was transferred to the post of Deputy Chairman of the USSR State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting, and after reorganizing the Committee into the All-Union State Broadcasting Company, he was engaged in economic, industrial, commercial and construction activities as Deputy Chairman of the Company.
In November 1991, Nikolai Ivanovich was appointed as the General Director of the General Executive Directorate, and after the formation of the Russian state television and radio company Ostankino, he became the Director General of the General Executive Directorate, a member of the Board of Directors of the Ostankino, where he resolved production, economic and social matters in the company and its divisions.
In 1992, Nikolai Ivanovich was the head of the financial and economic management group of the Russian Federation Supreme Council. Since 1992 to 1997 he worked as the chairman of the board - the Executive Director of JSC "Leskontrakt", as well as the director of the Federal Contract Corporation "Roscontract".
Since 1997 to the present time he is the Deputy General Director - Administrative Director of the Moscow Independent Broadcasting Corporation "TV-6 Moscow", and also a member of the Presidium of the Moscow Press Club of the International Non-Governmental Organization.
Nikolai Ivanovich Lykov was the winner and awardee of the Soviet Army and RSFSR championships. While working at the USSR State Television and Radio he was the Chairman of the organizing committees of the Games, in which many outstanding athletes took part. He also was a constant winner of the Games.
Nikolai Ivanovich Lykov was awarded with the three medals, the sign "Honorary radio operator of the USSR". For the development and implementation of progressive types of packaging he was awarded with three Exhibition of Economic Achievements medals of USSR. His success in production, sport and social activities are marked by 15 Honorary Diplomas. For active participation in the preparation and conducting the XII International Festival of Youth and Students, as well as in the celebration of the anniversary of the Komsomol, he was awarded with two Honorary Marks of the Central Committee of the Komsomol.
In 1958 Nikolai Ivanovich was elected as a deputy secretary of the Komsomol Committee of the Nevsky Machine-Building Plant.
