Taught mathematics there. First research in mechanics under I. A. Vyshnegradskii. Professor at the Petersburg Institute of Applied Technology, where he carried out original research.
Director of Russian State Railways, 1888-1892. Representative of the Council of Engineers with the Ministry of Transport from 1892. Assistant to the Minister for several years.
Participated in the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Founded the Engineering School attached to the Ministry of Transport.
