Sokoloff, Nikolai was born on May 28, 1886 in near Kieff, South Russia. Son of Gregory and Marie Sokoloff.


Began violin under father. Won scholarship at Yale University School of Music at 14. Studied under Charles Martin Loeffler 3 years.

Entered Boston Symphony orchestra as 1st violin at 17. Made concert tour France and England, 1911. Organized quartette, San Francisco, 1916, and was conductor Philharmonic Orchestra.

Conductor Cleveland Orchestra from its organization, 1918 to 1933. President Fairfield County (Connecticut) Music Association. Music director and conductor New York Orchestra, Has served as guest conductor Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orra, 1922, National Welsh Festival, Annanford, Wales, spring 1923 and February 1924 in London.

Also guest conductor New York Philharmonic Stadium Concerts, 1925, 26 also Philadelphia Orchestra, June and July 1926, March 1929. Guest conductor San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, June-July 1926-1927, for the San Mateo Philharmonic Society Director federal music project, 1935-1939. Conductor Seattle Symphony Orchestra, 1938-1941, San Diego Symphony Orchestra, 1939-1941.
