Nikolai Borisovich graduated from the literary department of the pedagogical faculty of the Voronezh State University (1931). He took a post-graduate course in the Voronezh State Pedagogical Institute, where he taught at the department of the Russian language and literature (since 1934).
Nikolai Borisovich began his literary activity in 1927. He was illegally repressed (in 1938-1939 he was under investigation). Since the autumn of 1939 was an associate professor of the Voronezh State Pedagogical Institute. He actively participated in local literary and public life, worked a lot with young authors.
