Nikolai Dmitrievich graduated from Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum in 1840. He attended lectures at Saint Petersburg Imperial University, attended drawing classes at the Academy of Arts.
In 1849, he was involved in the Petrashevsky case, was found not guilty, but was subjected to secret surveillance from September 9, 1849. Attended lectures on aesthetics and history in Saint Petersburg University.
In 1839-1845 Nikolai Dmitrievich served in the Ministry of War office, retired with the rank of collegiate secretary and completely devoted himself to literature, providing himself with fees.
