Nikolai Mikhailovich graduated from the Lyceum Charlemaque (Paris), Lyceum Tsarevich Nicholas (Moscow). He graduated from the Moscow Archaeological Institute (Paris). He graduated from the Moscow Law Institute.
Since 1921 he worked as a teacher at the Department of Art History, Faculty of Philology, Voronezh State University. He was arrested in August 1922 in Moscow among those destined to be expelled abroad, but was not expelled due to illness. Subsequently, he was arrested (1923, 1924, 1930), expelled from Moscow.He was arrested in Moscow, was transferred to Voronezh in the case of the former professor of the Voronezh branch of the Moscow Archaeological Institute E.N. Korovin and his son I.E. Korovin. In December 1935, he was declared insane and released from prison. Further he continued scientific activities.
He worked as a professor of the Moscow Archaeological Institute. In 1935 he worked as a senior researcher at the Research Institute of Local Studies.
An author of more than 10 books, including "Metro and the past of Moscow: Essays on Geology, History and Archeology of Moscow" (Moscow, 1935, 1938), "Vice-Admiral Kornilov" (Moscow, 1944), "Kutuzov" (Moscow, 1943, 1944, 1945), the historical novel "Skiff" (Moscow, 1930, 1992).
