From 1932 to 1938 he was a head of the Department of Breeding and Genetics of the All-Union Institute of Raw Material Economy. From 1932 to 1946 he was a head of the laboratory of cytogenetics of the Institute of Experimental Biology of the People's Commissariat of Public Health. From 1938-1941, 1945-1948, he was a professor and a head of the Department of Genetics at Voronezh State University. In 1966 he became a director of the Institute of General Genetics of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
In 1961 he married Lydia Georgievna Dubinina.
