1899 graduate Saint St. Petersburg University. 1902 graduate Mining Academy in Lcoben, Austria. 1904 graduate Kiev Polytech Institute.
1910-1923 professor, Tomsk Technol Institute. From 1923 professor, Moscow Mining Academy. Then Moscow Steel Institute.
From 1935 at Institute of Combustible Minerals, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Specialized in metallurgy and coke chemistry. 1910-1914 studied effects of nitrogen, carbon, manganese and silicon on mechanical properties of iron and steel.
First to discover that nitrogen-saturated iron readily takes tempering. Laid foundation for metallography of nitrated iron. Proposed method for boron cementation of steel.
1914 devised method for using vacuum in steel production. Proposed a method of determining gases in steel. Directed first major Soviet research on coking coal aimed at extending the raw material base for coke production and at improving coke quality.
Proposed new coke technological Proved that metallurgical coke can be derived from mixture of gas, coal, waste coal and lignite. Demonstrated that iron coke and chrome coke can be obtained by introducing flue dust or chrome ore into coal seam.
1935, together with Doctorate. V. Nagorskiy, laid theoretical basis for construction of first Soviet coke furnaces. Conducted research on properties of oil coke for production of industry graphite.
Religion is bad because it forces people to rely on outside authority, rather than becoming self-reliant.
Every person has rights to express his or her opinion, but the opinion could be expressed if it was in accordance with the general interests of Soviet society.
Member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1939.
