Nikolay Foregger was born on April 6, 1882, in Kyiv, Ukraine. His family came from Russified Austrian barons.
Excellent command of several foreign languages gave Nikolay Foregger the opportunity to seriously study various areas of Western culture and acquire a truly encyclopedic knowledge. His initial interest in theater is also connected with Europe: back in 1915 in Kiev, he was preparing a study on the democratic forms of the French "theater of the four masks". Nikolay Foregger was graduated from the Law Faculty of the Kyiv University but did not practice his profession. Nikolay learned painting from Sudeikin.
In 1914 Nikolay Foregger taught makeup at the ballet Studio of Mordkin. From 1916 till 1918 he worked at the Moscow Theater "Krivoe Zerkalo". In 1918 he opened the Four Masks Theater. From 1918 till 1919 he was in charge of the literary department of the Voronezh Free Theater.
Nikolay Foregger is the author of the text of the dramatic Opera and ballet performance "Rus" at the opening of the Free Theater. He was a teacher and director at the Higher theater workshops in Voronezh, where he did intermediate "Two talkers", "Salamanca cave", "Jealous old man" by Miguel de Cervantes.
The initiator of the creation and developer of the program "Union of new art workers" in Voronezh. He taught and worked in various Moscow theaters and studios. Nikolay Foregger put forward the idea of "Dancing October", the plastic form of which was "Dancing machines". Later he worked in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Kharkov, Kiev, and Kuibyshev (now Samara).
