He studied at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, Moscow, simultaneously studied cello at Moscow Conservatory. From 1922 he studied at Meyerhold State Theatrical Workshops in Moscow.
Since 1930, he directed the Realistic Theatre in Moscow, From 1938 to 1948 he was a producer at Vakhtangov Theater. He has produced: Mayakovsky’s “Misterya-buff” (Mystery-Bouffe) (1922). Gorky's “Mat” (Mother).
