1890 graduate Faculty of History and Philology, Moscow University.
Trom 1898 associate professor, Moscow University. 1904-1905 chairman, Moscow Pedagogical Social. 1905 ed, Bolshevik newspaper “Bor’ba”.
1906 joined Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party and sided with Bolsheviks. 1906 lecturer, Moscow Bolshevik Committee and ed, Bolshevik newspaper “Svetoch”. 1906-1907 lecturer, Saint St. Petersburg Bolshevik Committee.
1906 and 1907 dcleg, 4th and 5th Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congresses. Elected member, Central Committee at latter. 1907-1908 member, Russian Bureau, Central Committee, Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party.
April 1908 arrested; 1910 exiled to Eastern Siberia. During exile joined Mensheviks, contributed to their journal “Nasha zarya” and edited their newspaper “Novaya Sibir’”. After 1917 February Rcvol returned to Moscow and joined Social-Democratic group favoring reunion of various factions.
Appointed Deputy Minister of Posts and Telegraphs in Provisional Government. August 1917 rejoined Menshevik Party and was elected to Central Committee. Opposed October Revol.
In early 1920's arrested twice on political grounds. 1922 resigned from Menshevik Party but did not join Bolsheviks. Lectured at Leningrad and Moscow University, Institute of Red Professor, Institute of History, and Krupskaya Academy of Communist Training.
Also worked at Historical Museum. 1926-1927 co-ed, history section, “Biosystems Engineering ” (Large Soviet Encyclopedia). Favored the comparative historical method and viewed the historical process as a succession of evolutionary and revol epochs, whereby he treated rcvol as “accelerated evolution”.
Considered the October Revol as historical accident.
