1916 graduate six-month course at Alexandrine Military College and sent as ensign to 30th Infantry Reserve Regt in Tula. 1917 deputy, Tula Soviet. April 1917 elected member, 30th Infantry Reserve Regt Committee.
Head, Section Bureau, Tula Garrison Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Military Organisation From June 1917 member, Tula City Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) Committee. August 1917, after transfer of 30th Regt to Khar’kov, elected member, Executive Committee Khar’kov Soviet and member, Revol Staff to Combat Counter-revol.
26 October 1917 commanded 30th Regt which, together with Red Guards, occupied main buildings in Khar’kov and handed over power to Military Revol Committee. November 1917 elected commander, 30th Regiment December 1917 elected member, Military Revol Committee.
From February 1918 deputy People's Commissar of Military Affairs, Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Republic. From March 1918 member, Extraordinary Defense Staff. Commanded troops on Akhtyrka-Lebedyan’ and then Khar’kov sectors.
From April 1918 chief of staff, 5th Ukraine Army which fought a rearguard action from Lugansk to Tsaritsyn. From July 1918 chief of staff, Tsaritsyn Front. From August 1918 head, Troops Mustering and Training Department, North Caucasian Military district.
15 October 1918 mortally wounded near village Beketovka while commanding reserve brigade during Battle of Tsaritsyn.
