1937 graduate Operations Faculty, Frunze Military Academy and General Staff Academy.
April 1920 joined Soviet Army, rising quickly from private to platoon commander. Later chief of staff. Kiev Military district.
Headed General Staff Operations Board. Later First Deputy Chief of General Staff. During World War 2 chief of staff, Northwestern, Bryansk, Voronezh, Southwestern and 1st Ukraine fronts.
