Ivanov belonged to the club which members were propagated the dogma of Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy, and they distributed illegal editions of the writer. He was under secret police surveillance. In March 1886, the first meeting of Ivanov and L.N. Tolstoy was held, who helped publish several poems of Ivanov.
The story "Three friends" and the prose fable "The Flea and the Fly" (texts with the edits of Leo Tolstoy were saved) are included in the collection "Flower Garden" (Kiev, 1886).
In 1888 Ivanov lived with V.G. Chertkova on the farm Rzhevsk, Ostrogozhsky county, Voronezh oblast, Russian Federation.
