Wilson received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Earlham College in 1952. Two years later he earned his Master of Arts degree in Wildlife Management from the University of Michigan. In 1961, Nixon was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Purdue University.
Wilson served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. In 1961, he began his career as an ecologist in the Plague Research Unit of the Hawaii State Department of Health. Then in 1962, Nixon took a position of an acarologist at the Bernice P. Bishop Museum. Also he served as a professor at the University of Northern Iowa from 1969 to 1997. In 1997 he became a professor emeritus at the same university.
Wilson was a member of Iowa Academy of Sciences, Iowa Natural History Association, American Society of Mammalogists, American Acarological Society, American Society of Parasitologists and Entomological Society of Washington.
On June 15, 1963 Nixon Wilson married Flora Nell Hines. The marriage produced 2 children and three grandchildren.
