Nobukata Kiyohara was born in 1475. He was the son of Kanetomo Yoshida (Urabe).

Nobukata Kiyohara was adopted by Munekata Kiyohara and was at one time teacher to the Emperors Gokashiwabara and Gonara. Later entered a monastery to become a priest under the name of Sobu (1529). The explanatory notes for Smsho Gokyd (A Treatise on Nine Famous Classics of Confucianism) and Kam-sho (Treatise on the Japanese Alphabet) are said to have been written by him. Both works are highly valued in academic circles.
