Antarctica is the coldest place on earth. Ice covers the mountains, the valleys, and even the sea. In this frozen winter world, every creature is waiting for summer to come. When the sunny days arrive, a burst of new life begins. A mother Weddell seal finds a safe spot on the surface of the ice to have her baby. Nearby, a little Adélie penguin steals rocks from his neighbor to make a nest. A big emperor penguin works hard to find enough food for his newly hatched chick. The young animals must grow quickly, for summer in Antarctica is brief, and all too soon it will be winter once again. Antarctica is the coldest place on earth. Internationally renowned photographer Norbert Wu was given unprecedented access to the icy waters off Antarctica by the U.S. National Science Foundation to obtain these dynamic photographs. In the extreme conditions that prevail in these seas, invertebrates can grow to enormous sizes: sponges are as big as bears, jellyfish tentacles extend thirty feet, and giant sea spiders crawl through beds of soft coral. Wu has also focused his lens on the birds and mammals living at the edge of water and ice. We are humbled before mammoth icebergs, witness a killer whale stalking prey from a narrow crack in the ice, and see what penguins look like swimming underwater. Jim Mastro's introductory text elegantly condenses forty years of scientific research into a clear and concise natural history of this unique place.

diver filmmaker illustrator Photographer author cinematographer
Norbert Wu was born on January 25, 1961, in Los Angeles, California, United States. He is a son of an aeronautics professor.
In 1983 Nobert Wu received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University and a Master of Science in engineering science in 1985. He had a graduate study at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Nature photographer Norbert Wu has traveled around the world and has "been bitten by sharks, run over by an iceberg, stung nearly to death by sea wasps, and trapped in an underwater cave." Instead of keeping his adventures and discoveries to himself, Wu reveals hidden worlds to young readers with his books for children. Featuring sea creatures and plants of all kinds, as well as their underwater habitats, Wu’s books provide factual information as well as photos. Critics rave over the capacity of Wu’s photos to elicit the curiosity of young readers.
After earning two degrees from Stanford University, Wu spent time as a research diver at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in the Republic of Panama while he was earning his master's degree. The next year he exhibited photos at Stanford, winning an "Our-World-Underwater" scholarship in 1986. Wu later went on to pursue doctoral studies at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. During the late 1980s, Wu exhibited his work in northern and southern California. He also began assisting with cinematographic work on an award-winning PBS Nature documentary, "Seasons in the Sea," which depicts the underwater world off the California coast (the film won a Golden Panda Award at Wildscreen: International Wildlife & Environment Film & Television Festival in 1990). Additionally, Wu has participated in expeditions to Greenland and the Norwegian Seas, and to the North Pacific Gyre.
Wu began to produce books in the early 1990s. His first, Life in the Oceans, was published in 1991. Wu commented that his second book, Beneath the Waves, is an attempt "to help children discover beauty and life in a world they may otherwise not know at all." During the 1990s Wu was busy in the field as well as the studio. He filmed great white sharks, which appeared on PBS in Secrets of the Ocean Realm, and tiger sharks for the “Survival Anglia” natural history documentary series. Wu unveiled deep-sea creatures in his fifth book for children, Creeps from the Deep, in the late 1990s. With a National Science Foundation Artist and Writers grant, he explored Antarctica for two months to capture that region’s marine life on film. Wu himself has also become a subject of interest. Moving Pictures of New York is planning a television series based on his work: The Adventures of Norbert Wu.
Just as he has shared what he has learned about life underwater, Wu has revealed some of the techniques that he uses when he takes and sells photographs. He has been profiled in magazines and journals, including Underwater USA and Nature Photographer, and another profile appears in an algebra textbook published by Houghton Mifflin. Young fans hoping to emulate Wu may be inspired by his books How to Photograph Underwater and How to Sell Nature Photographs.
Exhibits of his work have been shown at the American Museum of Natural History, the California Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Museum of Wildlife Art. His films include a pioneering high-definition television (HDTV) program on Antarctic's underwater world for Thirteen/WNET New York's Nature series that airs on PBS.
