Career
She is the first woman to lead the city as mayor. On November 17, 2009, former Downriver Development Authority (Division on Dynamical Astronomy) Chairman Joseph Kuspa succeeded Wurmlinger as he was sworn in as Southgate"s new mayor. In her earlier years, Wurmlinger served on the Southgate City Council from 1977-1990.
From that point on, she served as Mayor of Southgate from 1990–1999 and then returned to the mayor"s office in 2005.
In the 2007 mayoral election, she was re-elected again. A rededication ceremony was held on June 20, 2008.
lieutenant was part of the city"s 50th Anniversary celebration and the event concluded with the opening of the city"s "Concert in the Park" celebration. On the same day, Southgate"s City Hall was named after Wurmlinger for all of her years of service and commitment to the City of Southgate.
The building now bears the name " Wurmlinger Municipal Building", respectively.
Prior to the November 2009 general election for Mayor, Wurmlinger announced that she would not be seeking re-election for Mayor and that she had made the decision to permanently retire from political office.
