(Designed as an introduction to the Holocaust, this book p...)
Designed as an introduction to the Holocaust, this book presents the origins and history of anti-Semitism, beginning with the year 70 A.D., when the Jews were forced out of Jerusalem, to the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. Finkelstein uses specific incidents from history to illustrate how anti-Semitism stripped Jews of their rights and dignity. The details of the Holocaust are presented in a factual way, designed to convey the somber nature of the Holocaust without being too frightening for younger children. Dramatic woodcuts accompany Finkelstein’s text.

It's 1927, and the air race is on! Three pilots compete to be the first to fly across the Atlantic. In the spring of that year, three airplanes were at Roosevelt Field on Long Island preparing for a historic journey - a nonstop flight between New York and Paris. Which plane would be first? Most predicted that the Columbia, with renowned test pilot Clarence Chamberlin at the controls, would lead the way.

(Black Bart was not the Old West’s only stagecoach robber,...)
Black Bart was not the Old West’s only stagecoach robber, but he was the most famous. To many people, he was a folk hero: a robber who didn’t threaten or harm passengers. He was a bandit with a sense of humor who wrote poetry. In robbing at least 28 Wells Fargo stagecoaches across Northern California between 1875 and 1883, he never fired a shot or injured anyone. His gun, it turned out, was never loaded.

2014Finkelstein believes in recognizing the struggles and contributions of all people who are part of American society. The author has strong opinions about children’s nonfiction, claiming in an interview with Boston Globe contributor Sean Smith that young people should be encouraged to enjoy reading for its own sake and that nonfiction is the overlooked area of children’s literature.
Quotations:
“You can’t talk down to them, you don’t take anything for granted as far as what they know, and yet you have to present facts with just enough supplementary, anecdotal stuff to make it interesting.”
"As I immerse myself in the subject matter at hand, I sometimes feel as if I’m becoming the world’s greatest expert on the topic."
“When I speak at schools, I always bring copies of my copy edited manuscripts with the crossing-outs, editor notes, and grammatical corrections. This always impresses my young readers who sometimes imagine that books are created full-blown out of a writer’s mind."
“Along with my writing career, I am also a public school librarian - the best job in any school. I get to admire and read new books and witness my student’s reactions to what they read. The library is the perfect laboratory for any writer.”
Finkelstein is a member of the American Library Association, Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Phi Delta Kappa, Foundation for Children’s Books, Association of Jewish Libraries as well as of the Massachusetts School Library Media Association.
Author and children’s librarian Norman Finkelstein has been fascinated with current events and politics since he was a young boy. He has also enjoyed reading, and claims that fun reading for him is still a good book on politics, diplomacy, or current issues. His personal interests shaped the kind of writing that he now does for children. He enjoys researching his writing even more than putting words on paper.
On July 4, 1967, Finkelstein married Rosalind Brandt, an electrologist. The couple has three children, Jeffrey, Robert and Lisa.
