("In the present exhibition the intention has been to demo...)
"In the present exhibition the intention has been to demonstrate the continuing vitality of the figurative tradition in recent American art. After somewhat more than twenty years, during which American artists achieved international leadership by demonstrating the possibility and vitality of a completely abstract mode of seeing, it is now perfectly clear that figuration is once again a serious vehicle of expression for many American artists." Thus does Norman A. Geske proclaim the theme of the American exhibition at the thirty-fourth Venice Biennale. His incisive introductory essay explores the major art movements of the postwar years-among them Abstract Expressionism, Pop and Op Art, and Funk-and notes a return to figurative painting and sculpture on the part of many artists. Mr. Geske states clearly, however, that this figurative mode is quite distinct from that of earlier eras. He suggests, "The obsolescent aspects of historic figuration have been eliminated and it is a different image which confronts us today. In the work of many American artists this renewal is clear and full of promise." Seventy-three works by ten artists-five sculptors and five painters-were chosen by Mr. Geske to demonstrate this new figuration. (Nearly all of the works exhibited are illustrated in this volume.) The artists are: LEONARD BASKIN BYRON BURFORD ROBERT CREMEAN EDWIN DICKINSON RICHARD DIEBENKORN FRANK GALLO RED GROOMS JAMES McGARRELL REUBEN NAKIAN FAIRFIELD PORTER A section of this book is devoted to each artist and includes a photograph of the man; an essay on the development and significance of his art; a biographical note listing such information as education, exhibitions, honors and awards, and public collections displaying his work; and a selected bibliography of books, periodicals, and exhibition catalogs by or about the artist.
