Jan Juliusz Ostrowski was born on June 12, 1947, in Krakow, Poland, to Juliusz and Anna (Byszewska) Ostrowski.
In 1970, Ostrowski received a Master of Arts from Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Then, in 1972, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Nancy in France.
Professor Jan K. Ostrowski is a research fellow at the Institute of Art History of the Jagiellonian University. He specializes in the history of contemporary art. Since 1989, he has been the director of the Wawel Royal Castle - National Art Collection.
He is also a member of the Central Commission for Degrees and Titles, the Committee for the Arts of the Polish Academy of Sciences and - as the Vice-Chairman - the Social Committee for the Restoration of Historical Monuments in Krakow (SKOZK). Ostrowski is also the head of the inventory program of sacred art monuments in the eastern territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
