Background

Harris, Norman Wait was born on August 15, 1846 in Berkshire Company, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Nathan Wait and C. Emeline (Wadsworth) Harris.

Education

Direct descendant of the 39th generation of Charlemagne, Frankish King and Roman Emperor, by his wife, Hildegarde, also descendant in the 26th generation of Countess Adelicia, the Fair Maid of Brabant, daughter of Godfrey I, who married Henry I. King of England, and whose second husband was William d’Albini, 2d earl of Sussex and Arundel. Also descendant of the 7th generation of Thomas Harris of England who settled in Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1630.

Educated Westfield (Massachusetts) Academy, 1863.

Aided in organizing, 1867, and secretary, 1867-1880, Union Century, Central Life Insurance Company, Cincinnati. Organized, 1882, banking house of N. W. Harris & Company, Chicago, New York and Boston. President Harris Trust & Savings Bank, Chicago, 1907-1913.

Also of Harris, Forbes & Company, New York, and N. W. Harris & Company, Inc., Boston. Many years member International Committee of Y.M C.A. to which he has been a large financial contributor. Vice president trustees Young Men’s Christian Association, Chicago.

President trustees Chicago Training School for Home and Foreign Missions (largest training school of its kind in the country to which he gave the land upon which its principal buildings are located and erected its chapel and one of its main buildings known as Harris Hall). Founded the Deaconess Pension Fund, contributing thereto $100,000 and is president trustees thereof. Trustee Northwestern University Donated $250,000, in 1911, to Public School Extension of Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago.

Also, 1913, $250,000 to Northwestern University to erect and maintain a building known as Harris Hall of Political Science and History. Home: Chicago, Ill.
