After graduating from Tokyo University (1877) proceeded to America for further studies.
Career
Returning home rejoined his alma mater as professor (1881), and then in turn was professor at 1st Higher School, then director of the same; professor at Kyoto University (1898), then president (1912). Late in life he devoted most of his time in experiments in organic chemistry.
