Okuni Takamasa became a disciple of Atsutane Hirata (1806). He studied at the Shoheiko (Shogunate college) under Seiri Koga. Also studied prosody under Harumi Murata.
After serving his lord at Tsuwano briefly he moved to Kyoto, where he founded the Hohon Gakusha School and taugh tmany disciples. He was famous for his erudition and became private tutor to Masamichi Takatsukasa, Courtier who held the high rank of kampaku (adviser to the Emperor).
He favored restoration of the Imperial regime. His lord at Tsuwano and the lords of Mito, Fukuyama, Himeji and Hiroshima heard his lectures on Shinto literature. His Shintoist ideas were largely responsible for the trends of thoughts which made the Meiji Restoration possible.
