He graduated from the Kursk Suvorov school, the 1st Moscow special school of the air force (1950), the faculty of philology of Moscow state university (1955), the post-graduate course of IMLI (1958).
In 1992 he became a Doctor of philology.
He was published as a critic since 1954. Since the second half of the 1950s he acted as a propagandist of the works of russian writers of the first emigration, first of all Bunin’s works; he was able to implement the first soviet editions of I. Shmelev, A. Averchenko, Teffi, E. Zamyatin, V. Nabokov, D. Merezhkovsky. Since 1973 he wrote historical novels and documentary and artistic biographies of writers. In 1990 he signed the "Letter of the 74th".
