Cosmonaut training took place in the period 2007-2009 and after this course passed examinations as "excellent". June 9, 2009 he became a test cosmonaut. In August 2009 he joined the crew of the Cosmonaut Training Center.
In 2010 he was awarded the rank of colonel, in summer, year 2012, dismissed from the military service in reserve.
He was the commander of the support crew on board of spacecraft "Soyuz TMA-04M" in May 2012 together with Evgeny Tarelkin and Kevin Ford. In September he got the commander seat of the main crew of the spaceship "Soyuz TMA-06M", and in October 23, 2012 it was launched to the International Space Station as members of ISS-33 expedition.
