Olin Eugene Rhodes Jr. was born on December 5, 1960, in Greenwood, South Carolina, United States. He is a son of Olin Eugene Rhodes and Carolyn Ann (Riser) Hurlstone, a secretary.
In 1983, Olin received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Furman University. Later, in 1987, he attained a Master of Science degree in Wildlife Biology, graduating from Clemson University. Some time later, Rhodes continued his education at Texas Tech University and got a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Wildlife Ecology in 1991.
Olin's research interests focus on Wildlife Ecology and Genetics, including studies of the genetic consequences of species reintroduction programs, the application of genetic tools for addressing issues in wildlife management, conservation and disease ecology, the use of genetic markers to elucidate mating systems, movement behavior and population structure of wildlife species and other issues.
In 1991, Olin began his career as an assistant research ecologist at the University of Georgia in Athens, a post he held until 1995, when he was appointed an assistant professor of forestry and natural resources at Purdue University in West Lafayette. In August of 1995, Olin was promoted to the post of a full professor at the same university and held this post until August of 2010.
Also, in 1991, Rhodes started to work as a guest lecturer at Oak Ridge Associated Universities and the same year, he was appointed an adjunct graduate faculty member at Clemson University and Texas Tech University. Moreover, in 1994, he acted as an organizer of Eco-Litter Day at Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.
From August 2010 till December 2011, Olin worked as an assistant director at the National WIldlife Research Center. Since January 2012, he has been holding a post of a director of Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.

Olin married Katherine Adair Shugart on June 25, 1989.
