(This book was digitized and reprinted from the collection...)
This book was digitized and reprinted from the collections of the University of California Libraries. It was produced from digital images created through the libraries’ mass digitization efforts. The digital images were cleaned and prepared for printing through automated processes. Despite the cleaning process, occasional flaws may still be present that were part of the original work itself, or introduced during digitization. This book and hundreds of thousands of others can be found online in the HathiTrust Digital Library at www.hathitrust.org.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(“An admirable safeguard against the commission of ‘social...)
“An admirable safeguard against the commission of ‘social errors.’” -America, a Catholic Review "Don't" is an 1889 book by Oliver Bell Bunce that deals with manners at the table, in the drawing-room, and in public, with taste in dress, with personal habits, with common mistakes in various situations in life, and with ordinary errors of speech. For example, in addressing proper fashion, Bunce instructs: “DON’T wear apparel with decided colors or with pronounced patterns. Don't—we address here the male reader—wear anything that is firefly. What have men to do with pretty things? Select quiet colors and unobtrusive patterns.” As Bunce states in introducing his book: “Many of the rules given in this little book are necessarily drawn from established authorities, but a considerable number of them are the result of the compiler's personal observation and experience. “Among the injunctions are many obviously familiar to every person with any pretensions to good breeding; but, wellknown as these maxims are, it was considered desirable to include them, for the reason that, however universal a rule may seem to be, a careful observer can not fail to see it violated every day in public by persons who from their appearance might be supposed to know better. These instances often, no doubt, occur through thoughtlessness or carelessness; but this book is intended to remind more, perhaps, than to instruct.” Contents I. At Table II. Oliver Bell Bunce was born on February 8, 1828 in New York City, of English stock.
He graduated from the Rand's Academy.
After attending Rand's Academy he became while still young a clerk in the stationery firm of Jansen & Bell, of which his uncle was a partner. He read avidly in his leisure hours and developed a competent literary style, his first play The Morning of Life being produced at the Bowery Theatre, August 30, 1848, while he was still selling foolscap and blank books over the counter. The play is no longer extant, but A. H. Quinn infers from the cast of characters that it was a rural comedy. Bunce wrote three other plays: Marco Bozzaris, also lost, a dramatization of recent Greek history, produced at the Bowery Theatre, June 10, 1850, with J. W. Wallack, Jr. , in the hero's part; Fate, or the Prophet (1856), a romantic tragedy in verse, which Wallack is also said to have produced, although Quinn has found no record of its production; and Love in '76, one of the best of the Revolutionary comedies, produced at Laura Keene's Theatre, February 28, 1857, with Miss Keene in the part of Rose Elsworth.
His theatrical work bringing him nothing more tangible than a certain name as a man of letters, Bunce turned to publishing, starting out for himself at the age of twenty-five years under the name of Bunce & Brother. The firm had little capital and lasted only a few years. He then became manager of the publishing house of James C. Gregory.
He began this sort of enterprise with a volume called In the Woods with Bryant, Longfellow, and Halleck, with illustrations by John A. How. After a short period with Harper & Brothers he became literary manager of D. Appleton & Company, with whom he remained for the rest of his life. He edited Appleton's Journal and had much to do with the policy of the house.
He took a keen interest in his authors, often sending one a fourpage letter, criticizing his manuscript unmercifully for three pages and accepting it on the fourth. Similar treatment, kindly meant but sometimes frightening, was meted out orally to writers who called at the office.
His Sunday evening suppers were a happy institution among many New York literary men. His most ambitious undertaking for the Appletons was Picturesque America (1872 - 74), two handsome volumes, sumptuously illustrated, which were sold in parts by the old subscription method. The work was nominally under the editorship of William Cullen Bryant, but the conception and execution were really Bunce's.
He died, as he claimed that he wished to, in harness, working in his office till a week before the end, and taking manuscripts home with him to read for his employers on his deathbed. He was survived by a wife and four children.

The last twenty years of his life were a brave battle with tuberculosis.
He was survived by a wife and four children. After his death, his widow published articles and recipes under the name Mrs. Oliver Bell Bunce.
