After graduating from Tokyo University (1927) with a degree in German literature continued his studies under Kunio Yanagida, famous scholar on folklore, and studied life in mountain and fishing villages.
Career
Later proceeded to Manchuria to become professor at Kenkoku University (1939) and while there studied the life and conditions of the tribes living near the Russian and Manchurian borders. Returning home after World War II was appointed manager of Folklore Research Institute (1946). He was instructor at Chuo University and professor of literature at Kyoto University.
