Omar Hasan oglu Eldarov is an Azerbaijani sculptor, academician, Honoured Art Worker of Azerbaijan, and People's Painter of Azerbaijan. His most notable works include Sattar Bahlulzade's portrait, Muslim Mogomayev's bust, monument to Huseyn Javid (1993), monument to Mammed Amin Rasulzade (1995) and monument to Azim Azimzade (2002), among others.
Background
Omar Eldarov was born on December 21, 1927 in Derbent, Republic of Dagestan, Russia. His grandfather Husein Eldarov was a stonecutter. His parents were Hasan Eldarov and Elizaveta Eldarova. His mother was a very sensitive person. His father was an energetic, artistic and freedom-loving individual. He was an expert in soil sciences and taught in agricultural institutes in Baku and Gyandzha. Besides, Hasan Eldarov also organized a drama theatre in Derbent.
Omar Eldarov's elder brother Rashid followed in the footsteps of his father, he was greatly taken by the theatre and became an actor in the Azerbaijan Drama Theatre and also in the cinema. He was also a very good photographer.
Education
When Omar Eldarov was six years old, his mother took him to the Baku Art studio for gifted children where he was accepted to the sculpting department. From 1942 to 1945 Eldarov studied at Azerbaijan State Art School named after Azim Azimzade.
In 1951, he graduated from the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after Ilya Repin in St. Petersburg. The period of study there was marked by difficulties and successes, the acquisition of craftsmanship and a huge body of knowledge. He was the student of such great masters as A.T. Matveyev and M.A. Kerzin.
Omar Eldarov’s final diploma work was an extremely complex nine figured haut-relief work entitled "The Young Guards". He was given the highest mark for this work and it was exhibited at the 1951 Exhibition of Leningrad Artists and then donated to the Azerbaijan Art Museum.
Omar Eldarov participated at the Trans-Caucasus Region Exhibition in 1954 with the Portrait of Natavan.
He is the author of Sattar Bahlulzade's portrait, Muslim Mogomayev's bust, monument to Huseyn Javid (1993), monument to Mammed Amin Rasulzade (1995), monument to Azim Azimzade (2002), Rashid Behbudov's bas-relief (2002), Nizami Ganjavi's bust in Cheboksary (2004), gravestones of Zarifa Aliyeva, Haydar Aliyev, Sikh-Ali Gurbanov, Tofig Guliyev in the Alley of Honorable Burial in Baku, gravestone and bas-relief of Uzeyir Hajibeyov in Vienna (2005), Niyazi's bas-relief (2006), monument to Haydar Aliyev in Nakhchivan (2006), monument to İhsan Doğramacı in Ankara (2003), memorial plaque of Tofig Guliyev (2006), memorial plaques of Haydar Aliyev and academician Zarifa Aliyeva (2008).
From 1995 to 2000, Omar Eldarov was the deputy of parliament - the National Assembly of Azerbaijan. In 2000 Eldarov was appointed Rector of Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts.
Omar Eldarov became a member of the USSR Union of Artists in 1953. He was also elected a member of the Governing Secretariat of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan from 1956 to 1968. In 1967 he was elected a correspondent member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR.
Besides, Eldarov was elected a member of the Parliament of Azerbaijan in 1995.
In addition, since 2001 he has been a member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
Personality
Omar Eldarov is a titanic man: warm-hearted, considerate and extraordinarily modest. He has a multitude of qualities, each of which taken on their own would be considered an enormous gift. He is an erudite intellectual who is hugely competent in a number of disciplines.
Besides, Omar Eldarov is a person with a very strong sense of his civil responsibilities. Moreover, he is an aesthete, but above all - a humanist. The most beautiful state of being for him is a moral one - he cannot imagine either mankind or his art outside a strong ethical framework.

Omar Eldarov is married to Ema Eldarova. He has three children: two daughters - Lala Eldarova, an art critic; Kamilla Eldarova, a painter; and a son Muslim Eldarov, a sculptor and publisher.
