Adewoye was born on October 27, 1939 in Inisa, Osun, Nigeria.
Adewoye studied at St. Peter`s Primary School from 1945 to 1952. A year later he entered the Kiriji Memorial College, which he graduated in 1957. Omoniyi studied at the University of Ibadan in 1959-1963. Also in 1964, he entered Columbia University, which graduated in 1968.
Adewoye began his career as a lecturer of the Department of History at the University of Ibadan in 1968. Seven years later he took a position of a senior lecturer at the same university. The same year Omoniyi became a commissioner at the Ministry of Economic Development. Then in 1976, he held the same position at Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. In 1977, Adewoye was appointed a commissioner at Federal Ministry of Economic Development and held it for two years.
Since 1984 he has been a professor at the University of Ibadan. Also he served as a head of the history department at the same university from 1993 to 1996. In 1995, Omoniyi became a vice chancellor at the University of Ibadan, where he worked until 2001.
Adewoye was a chairman of Council of Ministers of Economic Community of West African States and Nigerian-Niger Joint Commission from 1977 to 1978. Also he was an honorable treasurer of Historical Society of Nigeria in 1972-1977.
He has five children.
