Private school.
He attended private schools, read law, and began a practice in 1825. Kenan soon left his law practice to run the family plantation. He served as a Democrat in the North Carolina House from 1834 until 1838, and then dropped out of politics.
After the election of Lincoln, he became a secessionist. Elected to the first Confederate House, he supported the Davis administration and vigorously pursued the defense of the North Carolina coast from the Union Navy. A strong localist, Kenan refused to support the tax-in-kind.
He did not seek election to the second Congress, and he returned to his plantation. After the war Kenan returned to the practice of law, but he held no further political office.
"Peculiar institution" of slavery was not only expedient but also ordained by God and upheld in Holy Scripture.
Stands for preserving slavery, states' rights, and political liberty for whites. Every individual state is sovereign, even to the point of secession.
