Somers, Orlando Allen was born on January 24, 1843 in Middletown, Indiana, United States. Son of Valentine and Mary McClain (Williams) Somers.

Educated Howard College, Indiana.

Career

William Burton Morris, April 5, 1866. Married second, Emma, d. John Osborne Heaton, March 24, 1887.

Teacher and superintendent schools, Howard County, Indiana. Postmaster, Kokomo, 1879-1885. County commissioner, 1892-1895.

Member Indiana House of Representatives, 1898-1900. Supervisor 12th Decennial Census, 11th District, Indiana. Public instructor in highway construction and maintenance, conservation of soils, coöperative production, and sale of farm products, Purdue University Private 39th Regiment Indiana Volumes and 8th Regiment Indiana Veterinary Cavalry, 1861-1865.

Participated in battles of Shiloh, Stone’s River, Chickamauga, and many minor engagements. Orator Society Army of the Cumberland, 1904, secretary, 1905-1913, president, 1913-1918 (only private soldier that has held any office in this society). Post commander G.A.R., at age of 24.

Commander Department of Indiana, 1909-1910. Commander in chief G.A.R., 1917-1918.
