He graduated from the Russian course of the Tokyo School of Foreign Language (1883). Became a disciple of Dr. Shoyo Tsubouchi, novelist and playwright, and wrote many novels, which were featured by a melancholy atmosphere and humanism reminiscent of Russian novelists.
He was on the staff of the Kokumin Shimbun (newspaper) (1891-1896) and was appointed teacher of Russian at the Military Academy.
