Oscar Osorio was El Salvador's politician and pulic official to serve as the 32d President of the country from 1950 to 1956.

Background

Oscar Osorio was born on 14 December 1910 in Sonsonate.

Education

He studied at the Escuela Politécnica Militar and had a normal military career until 1945 when, implicated in a conspiracy, he was exiled to Mexico.

Career

He returned to ElSalvador in 1948, after the overthrow of President Castañeda Castro, to become a member of a new Revolutionary Council.

The young military organized the Revolutionary Party of Democratic Unification (PRUD), and it elected Osorio president in 1950. He was succeeded by his minister of interior, José María Lémus.

Osorio soon broke with his successor. In I960 he formed the PRUD (Auténtico), but it did not prosper. Thereafter, he ceased to be a major factor in national politics.

Achievements

  • His presidency established social security, and legalized trade unions and collective bargaining for urban, but not rural, workers. It also established the Salvadoran Institute for Development of Production and began a large hydroelectric project on the Lempa River.
