Career

Admitted to Illinois bar, 1879, and began practice at Freeport. State’s attorney Stephenson County, Illinois, 1884-1900. Judge Circuit Court, 1903-1924.

Judge Appellate Court, 2d District of Illinois, 1919-1921, 3d District, 1921-1924. Justice Supreme Court, Illinois, term, 1924-1933, chief justice, 1927-1928, 1932-1933. Member of law firm of Heard & Heard.

Assigned to hold court in Chicago part of each year for over 20 years. Presided at the E. St. Louis Race Riot Cases, 1917.
