Oswaldo Veiga Jardim lives and works in Macau as a freelance conductor, music teacher, and independent musicologist with research interests including many different aspects related to nineteenth-century Brazilian and Portuguese music, Orientalism in Western classical music, focusing in particular on musical life in nineteenth and early twentieth-century Macau.
Background
Oswaldo Veiga Jardim is of Italian descent from his mother's side, Avahy (née Riccio) Xavier da Veiga Jardim, with ancestors from the region of Battaglia, province of Salerno. Son of Brazilian journalist Gontran da Veiga Jardim, he is related from his father's side to two eminent Brazilian singers, sopranos Graciema Félix de Sousa and Ângela Barra da Veiga Jardim. At a very early age, Oswaldo started his piano studies with Creusa Rebello, a renowned music educator, sister of the Amazonian pianist and composer Arnaldo Rebello and began appearing as a conductor at the age of seventeen.
Education
After earning two degrees (Conducting and Composition with honours) from the School of Music of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where he had the opportunity to study with a number of influential and accomplished teachers, such as Myrian Dauelsberg, Henrique Morelembaum, Murillo Santos, Virgínia Fiuza, Raphael Baptista and Ricardo Tacuchian, Mr Veiga Jardim furthered his studies in Italy, at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana with the great Russian conductor Gennady Rozhdstvensky. During his formative years in Rio de Janeiro, Mr Veiga Jardim (known at the time in his home country as Oswaldo Jardim), has been music director of the former Choir of MEC Radio and assistant conductor of the Rio de Janeiro Youth Symphony Orchestra, where he furthered his training under the mentorship of the late David Machado (himself a disciple of great conductors such as Sergiu Celibidache, Franco Ferrara and Wolfgang Sawallisch), leading the orchestra in various subscription, education and family concerts. Thus, while still very young, he acquired a rich experience in preparing the great works of the symphonic and choral-symphonic repertoire.
Career
Winner of several awards and scholarships as a composer, pianist and conductor, among them a special jury prize at the Gino Marinuzzi Competition in San Remo, Italy (1987), Mr Veiga Jardim moved to Macau in 1988 where he played a pivotal role in the city’s music scene as conductor and artistic director of the Macau Chamber Orchestra and founder of the Macau Sinfonietta (1989-1995), predecessor of present-day Macau Orchestra. During his tenure as music director of the Macau Sinfonietta, he has enjoyed musical collaborations with artists such as Peter Schreier, Yu Lina 俞丽拿, Liu Shikun 劉詩昆, Takako Nishizaki, Lim Kek Beng, Monique Duphill, Sequeira Costa, Li Chuan Yun 李傳韻, Cristina Ortiz, Olivia Newton-John and Hong Kong pop singer Jacky Cheung 張學友. In 1996, Veiga Jardim designed and implemented (1997–2006) the curriculum of the Music Course at the Macau Polytechnic, the first music degree course created in Macau officially recognized by the government. Described by the South China Morning Post as “sparkling and energetic”, Mr Veiga Jardim has attracted intense acclaim from critics and the general public in his appearances conducting the major choirs and orchestras in his native land as well as abroad, among which the Gulbenkian Choir (Portugal), Hong Kong Oratorio Society, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Orchestra Sinfonica di San Remo (Italy), Prague Philharmonic (Czech Republic), China Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, Central Opera Symphony Orchestra of China, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Macau Orchestra and Shanghai Opera Chorus. His acclaimed performance of the Verdi’s Requiem, recorded live in 1999 at the Hong Kong City Hall is available on CD. Conductor and Honorary Music Director of the Macau Youth Symphony since its foundation in 1997, Veiga Jardim contributed decisively to its artistic development taking the orchestra on highly acclaimed tours of Singapore, Australia, Europe and Mainland China performing in prestigious venues such as the Victoria Hall (Singapore), Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Smetana Hall (Prague), Berlin Konzerthaus, Salzburg Mozarteum and the Wiener Musikverein Grosser Saal. As a composer, Veiga Jardim wrote the soundtrack for the Chinese movie “The Bewitching Braid” (1996) and is the author of several songs for voice and piano as well as works for piano solo, published in 2000 by the Macau Polytechnic Institute. Grandson of a bandmaster and passionate about Macau’s history of music, Veiga Jardim has been writing extensively on this topic in local newspapers and magazines since 1992. He is author of several academic papers on this subject, which have been presented in international conferences, namely the “International Council for Traditional Music” (Ireland, 2017 and Thailand, 2019) and the 21st CHIME International Conference, held in Lisbon in 2019. His MPhil thesis, which discusses the influence of brass bands in shaping the musical life of colonial Macau, was published as a book in 2018 by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau SAR government under the title "Watching the Band Go by: Religious Faith and Military Defence in the Musical Life of Colonial Macau 1818-1935". He is also author of the book "Chinese Musical Instruments", released in 1999 by the Macau Post Office. From 2001 to 2013 he was a member of the Consultative Council for Cultural Affairs and in 2006 was awarded the Medal of Cultural Merit by the Government of Macau SAR for his outstanding services to music in Macau.
