Ota studied Japanese drawing under Kogyo Terazaki and oil painting under Kiyoteru Kuroda. He'd studied in France for 2 years (1920-1922).
Ota displayed his works at the Imperial Exhibition (Teiten) but left it upon its reorganization. During the war, he was director of the Japan Arts Patriotic Society. Also was a chairman of the Central Japan Arts Association.
