Otani Senzan was born in 1853 in Yonago, Tottori, Japan. Otani was the eldest son of Kensai, an obstetrician.

Otani studied in Tokyo (1875-1784).
Career
Senzan opened the Sanshu Gakusha School in Matsue City, served in the local law court and then engaged in chemical research. He made or improved camphor powder, fishing net dyestuffs, waterproofing materials and others.
