Otojiro Kawakami was a versatile entertainer, he led a varied life in the music halls of Japan. A strong advocate of Oppekeke Bushi (humorous ballads), he gave them a new lease of life, while he tried to introduce democracy into the entertainment world. Later, he founded the drama in opposition to classical Kabuki. Late in life, Otojiro Kawakami mostly devoted himself to staging plays and built the Kawakamiza Theater at Tokyo and the Teikokuza Theater at Osaka, predecessors of modern theaters.
