Ono-no-Otsu was born in 1558. She was a daughter of Masahide Ono.
Ono-no-Otsu seems to have served Nobunaga Oda. She composed poems on the occasion of the cherryblossom viewing party of Hideyoshi Toyotomi at Daigo (1598). She even drew portraits of Hideyoshi and Ieyasu Tokugawa. Some scholars suggest that Joruri Junidan Zoshi, the oldest joruri (ballad drama), might have been written by her. Others suspect that she rewrote the joruri from other stories.
Ono-no-Otsu was a daughter of Masahide Ono (according to a note accompanying a copy made by her (1583) of the Kiyo-wakashu, Anthology). She married Urin Watase and gave birth to Otsu II.
