"Foreword": Angel Flesh stares down madness. Its poems are ecstatic, grotesque, bloody, and disoriented by blizzards. Were I to expose this book in the desert, I'd expect crow and condor to make short work of it. I recommend adding one page, well-shredded, to a pot of green chili. Expect indigestion. Better yet, ingest with ouzo-one shot per poem. Masticate vigorously. Angel Flesh was inspired by actual events in my life, but poetry is, as it has always been, witchcraft-shamanism and myth-making; therefore, I remind the reader to take this work, not literally, but metaphorically, and not as an historical or journalistic document, but as an attempt at art. Accordingly, names have been altered to conceal the identities of those whose actions informed its composition. Consider, too, that poems re-create states of mind, inevitably the author's own. Memory is subjective and relative. Angel Flesh concerns real issues of love and death. A woman I loved attempted suicide: in some poems, she survives; in others she does not. My subsequent horror led me open-eyed and stunned into my own madness-through the gates of fragmentation, dissociation, panic disorder, nightmares and sleeplessness...I am fortunate to have lived much of this madness through verse. If you do not consider love, death, and psychic meltdown proper fodder for poetry or myth, don't bother reading Angel Flesh. Some poems are explicitly violent and/or explicitly sexual, so exercise sound judgment and bury the book as terma in your neighbor's back yard. Padma Jared Thornlyre Golden, Colorado December 3, 1997 "Angel Flesh" is available exclusively in a limited--numbered and signed edition--of 300 copies.
