Pantaleo Carabellese started his career as a Professor at the University of Palermo in 1922. He held this post until 1929. He also worked as a professor at the University of Rome. Carabellese published his first book Critica del concreto in 1921. Later he wrote such books as Il problema della filosofia da Kant a Fichte, Le obbiezioni al cartesianesimo and L'idea politica d'Italia. His book L’essere e la sua manifestazione parte II was published after his death.
Carabellese called himself a critical ontologist. He carried out a rigorous critique of Cartesianism and completed critical studies of authors including Immanuel Kant and Antonio Rosmini. Carabellese is further known for his "critical ontology" where Being (l'Essere) is not the mere abstract object but the inherent and irreducible foundation of consciousness.
