Parthasarathi Sensarma was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, on March 25, 1968. He began his professional career in the Indian power and electrical-engineering sector before moving into research and higher education.
Sensarma studied electrical engineering at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, completing a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1990. He earned a Master of Technology in Machine Drives and Power Electronics from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 1992 and completed a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 2001. His academic preparation established the foundation for his later work in power electronics and power-system applications.
Sensarma began his industrial career as a management trainee at Bharat Bijlee Limited in 1992–1993 and subsequently worked as a management trainee at the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation Limited in Kolkata from 1993 to 1994, including experience connected with a 150-megawatt thermal power station. After completing his doctoral studies, he worked as a scientist in the Power Electronics Group of ABB Corporate Research in Switzerland from 2000 to 2002. He joined the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur as an assistant professor in 2002, became an associate professor in 2009, and was appointed professor in 2014. His work at IIT Kanpur has centered on power electronic applications to power systems, power quality, FACTS devices, power supplies, utility interfaces for renewable generation, and power conversion. He became Professor-HAG in the Department of Electrical Engineering in August 2024.
Developed and published research on new power-electronic converter topologies, renewable-energy interfaces, matrix converters, UPS systems, photovoltaic microinverters, resonant converters, and switched-reluctance-machine systems.
Contributed to patents pending for a new method for optimal power-system expansion planning.
