This text show the portayals of the landscape of nature on French codices from the Middle Ages onwards. The illustrations, text and folio borders of each codex are often of high quality. From the early stylized portrayal of natural phenomena, the art moved onto a more realistic style, as reality rather than tradition and authority became more important; this was the gradual development of early landscape painting. This text is aimed at the medieval scholar, as well as being a guide for those visiting museums and galleries. Its historical interest is the discussion of the portrayal of the background to historical events.

This, the third in a series of works on medieval manuscript illumination, focuses on the lives of women in medieval civilization. As well as documentation concerning the history of the manuscrpit itself, the illuminations show female costume and activities. Among the women depicted are those from the upper classes, but also women of antiquity, goddesses, Lady Fortune and the Virgin Mary. Many of the illuminations date from the 15th century - the height of manuscript illumination.
