Patrick Lau graduated from the University of Toronto in 1983 with a degree in landscape architecture. He also completed graduate school in 1989 at the University of Hong Kong with a degree in urban design.

Foreign over 20 years, Patrick Lau has been involved in landscape projects in China, such as Hong Kong Cyberport, Beijing Sanlitun Pleasant Villages, and Tianjin Water City. Projects he had constructed include Penny"s Bay Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Beijing Olympic Aquatic Park, Olympic Village, and the Suzhou Old City revitalization project He was elected chairman of the Hong Kong Trees Conservation Association.
Lau is also the former president of the Hong Kong Institution of Landscape Architects.
